General Info, Terms, and Conditions for Dahlia Tuber Sales
Welcome to our Dahlia Tuber Sales! We are so glad you’re here. Please carefully read the following terms and conditions before making a purchase. By purchasing from us, you agree to these terms. But also, please know that we are very easy to work with. If there is a problem with your order, we really want to know!
General Terms
- Prices are subject to change. The price at the time of purchase is final. We may put items up for sale as the season goes on to clear out remaining inventory.
- Your order is not final until you have fully checked out. There is a cart timer that kicks in when inventory is low to try to help you hold on to your items, however, it is not guaranteed.
- No refunds or replacements will be given if the tuber fails after it has been used to make cuttings.
What to Expect
- Tubers: Your order will include a viable dahlia tuber that is ready for planting with a visible eye or sprout. I do not trim sprouts unless they are extremely long and don’t fit in the package. If yours is trimmed, it’s because it didn’t fit.
- Packaging: Tubers are packaged with care to ensure they arrive in optimal condition. Each tuber is packaged separately and clearly labeled in its own plastic bag with vermiculite. This is done to keep them separated in case an issue should arise with one of them. You won’t have to throw out the entire order.
- Growing Instructions: A set of care and planting instructions will accompany your order to try to help you achieve the best results. They are not comprehensive instructions because dahlias can thrive in a variety of climates and locations.
- You may also be sent an additional tuber(s) at no charge. These are usually tubers that did not get confirmed in the previous growing season. 95% of the time, these will be the correct variety. (I did make this statistic up, but it really does normally hold true because I’m a little bit OCD.) What this means is that the variety has been confirmed in my garden, but the specific plant that this tuber came from did not bloom. I verify each and every plant, not just the variety, so any plant that doesn’t bloom, is considered “not confirmed (NC)” and marked appropriately. Now, if it is marked as “variety not confirmed” that means that I did not have any blooms at all during the season (probably due to it being received and planted late). Those are the other 5%. They could be anything. The variety of the freebie(s) is not guaranteed. It’s just my way of sharing what I have. I also do not want you to think that it is included as a way to prevent you from reaching out if there is an issue. Please let me know if there’s a problem with your actual order. I want you to be happy with your order. That’s what you paid for! The freebie has nothing to do with it.
What to Do When Your Order Arrives
- Inspect Your Order: Carefully open your package and inspect each tuber for any damage. You should be able to easily see an eye or sprout.
- Contact Us if Necessary: If you find any issues with your order, please email us at info@perrydisefarm.com within 48 hours of receipt with photos. Depending on the situation, it is possible we may provide you with a shipping label and request that you send the tuber back to us for further inspection. Should you decide to keep the tuber, we will assume that the sale is final and no refund or replacement will be given. If it’s been more than 48 hours, please know you can still contact us. Sometimes freeze damage doesn’t show up right away, and we understand that. But we really do need you to open your order and make sure they look ok in the first couple days.
- Store Properly: If you are not planting immediately, store your tubers in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. We recommend leaving the vermiculite around the tuber, but opening the bag to prevent condensation. We are not responsible for failed storage.
Tubers
- You are buying a single tuber, not a clump.
- Each tuber will have at least one eye or sprout clearly visible.
- Sprouts can become damaged or knocked off in storage, packing, or transit. This is not cause for concern and will not harm your dahlia’s growth. Sprouts can sometimes turn black if there is too much moisture in the package, it has been in contact with the plastic for too long, or it has become damaged in some way. This is also not cause for concern. You may cut away the damaged part of the sprout.
- If your tuber has sprouted and the sprout has been knocked off either during packaging or shipping, it will create 3-4 eyes in the place of the original sprout. This is not gall. This is normal for dahlias. Some people do this on purpose for more stems.
- Each tuber will typically be labeled with the variety name or an abbreviation of the name written on the tuber with a permanent garden marker.
- Tubers can be any size, shape, width, or length. We can’t guarantee they’ll be a specific size or look pretty. If they are very small or very ugly though, we do try to mark them as such before you buy. They should all be reasonably firm regardless of their size or shape.
- Tubers have 3 basic parts: eye, neck, and body. However, tubers do not always have visible necks, so if your tuber is mostly body and an eye, that is still a viable tuber and it will grow perfectly fine.
- The body of the tuber may have been cut at the bottom due to size. This does not affect the growth of the tuber. Your tuber will still grow just fine. We try not to have to do this, but it does happen on very rare occasions.
Shipping
- Orders will ship based on the weather, in the order they are received. We are in the Midwest, so we have to use caution when shipping across the country. As much as we would love to be able to send orders out right away, it’s not always possible. We’ll do our best to get them to you as soon as possible. In most cases, it takes between 1 – 1 1/2 weeks to ship your order. We try to only ship Mon-Wed to prevent packages from sitting on USPS trucks over a weekend.
- We ship within the continental United States. We do not offer international shipping at this time.
- We ship USPS Priority Mail, which should reach you within 3 days of shipping but is not guaranteed. We will send you a tracking number when your order is shipped.
Disease Management
- Our plants are inspected for virus throughout the growing season. We cull plants if we find evidence of disease. However, our plants are not virus tested.
- We sanitize snips with a disinfecting bleach solution in between each plant to prevent cross contamination.
- We use pesticides as needed to reduce pest pressure which helps prevent the transfer of dahlia viruses via insects. Imidacloprid is used occasionally as a systemic pesticide.
- All dahlias have been grown for at least 1 year on our farm.
- Varieties are stored separately to prevent cross contamination during storage.
Guarantee
- Tubers are guaranteed to be true to variety.
- If a dahlia does not bloom true to variety, you must contact us by October 31 of the year in which you purchased with photos of the flower and your order number. Please keep in mind that dahlia blooms are often not strictly uniform and can change color based on the weather and soil conditions. We cannot guarantee your bloom will look exactly as pictured because of this. (As an example, the very popular “Cafe au Lait” normally blooms cream, but during a hot drought, we have seen it bloom fully pink.) Our photos are taken based on how the flower typically bloomed in our climate and soil. Also, please bear in mind, first blooms of a plant can be a little bit off.
- If we have sent you the wrong variety, we will refund the cost of the tuber.
- If your plant shows signs of crown or leafy gall and you feel it came to you this way, please contact us at info@perrydisefarm.com for assistance. As long as the tuber has not been planted or been used for cuttings, we will guarantee that it is free of gall. Depending on the situation, it’s possible we may provide you with a shipping label and request that you send the tuber back to us for further inspection. This is important to us because any sign of gall has to be investigated in our garden as well, so we may need to examine it more closely or send it for testing to confirm disease. Should you decide to keep the tuber, we will assume that the sale is final and no refund or replacement will be given.
What We Cannot Guarantee
- It is estimated that 80% of dahlias have some form of virus. We do our best to cull individual plants that present with viral symptoms, but we cannot provide a guarantee against virus. If you find virus in something we’ve sent you, please feel free to let us know so we can evaluate our stock more closely to check for issues.
- We cannot be responsible for crown or leafy gall once the tuber has been planted or cuttings have been taken due to environmental factors that may be out of our control. However, if your tuber presents with either of these prior to planting (assuming no cuttings have been taken), please contact us immediately.
Thank you for choosing our dahlia tubers. We wish you a successful and beautiful growing season!
